G7 Countries
The G7 is an informal bloc of industrialized democracies – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US – that meets annually to discuss global economic governance, international security, and emerging issues.
G7 - The Formation
In 1975, as the world faced an oil crisis and financial turmoil, the heads of state from the 6 leading industrial nations (France, West Germany, USA, Japan, UK, Italy) met for the first time to discuss the global economy. This inaugural meeting was initiated by French President Giscard d’Estaing and German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, and took place at the Château de Rambouillet.
At this first G6 summit, the leaders adopted a 15-point communiqué called the Declaration of Rambouillet, and agreed to hold annual meetings with a rotating presidency. In 1976, Canada joined the group, which then became known as the G7.
G7 became G8 as Russia joined in1988 however it was excluded in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea. The G7 has continued to meet annually to coordinate global economic issues.
