Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first Water Metro services, in Kochi-Kerala, on Tuesday, April 25th, 2023. It was a long-time wish of the Kochi people to restart the water services, Once an integral part of trade and travel, modern vehicles and road infrastructure popularism destroyed  water transport. Water transport began to lose its priority to such an extent that, a generation later people even forgot the routes.

Kochi Water Metro would be a significant contributor to the woes of public transportation.  The water metro service has electrically propelled hybrid ferries connecting the 10 islands, in and around Kochi to the mainland, thus benefitting the residents on the islands. The project was set up at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore. It is funded by the Kerala government and a German funding agency. Kochi Water Metro has 78 electric boats and 38 terminals. In the first phase of the project, service would begin from the High Court-Vypin terminals to the Vyttila – Kakkanad terminals. Passengers can travel in both Kochi metro and the water metro using the “Kochi 1” card. They can also book the tickets digitally.

Water metro kochi, each boat can carry up to 100 passengers. It has a seating capacity of 50. It is equipped with all modern facilities – is air-conditioned, battery-operated, and environment-friendly. Kochi’s metro service has been operational since 2017. This water metro will operate in the Kochi backwaters and will connect as many as 10 islands and improve connectivity between these islands and the mainland. 3 water metros were inaugurated by the Prime Minister with Kerala’s CM in attendance. These are hybrid, battery-operated, air-conditioned boats with many modern features. Unlike regular ferries, these boats are noise-free. All terminals will also have a charging facility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met the top priests of various churches in Kerala. Giving a push to the BJP’s efforts to reach out to the influential minority community in the southern state ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. On Tuesday Modi also flagged off Kerala’s first Vande Bharath Express train from Thiruvananthapuram.He also inagurated the Kerala Water Metro.

PM Modi was on a 2-day visit to Kochi inaugurating developmental projects. Besides his usual style of waiving from his vehicle, everyone was surprised to see Modi walking down the road without any protection. People loved it and showered him with flowers. Reacting to the warm welcome in Kochi,  PM Modi said he was overwhelmed by the love he received. Boldly walking without protection though under huge threats and in a non-BJP-led government has increased the bold outlook. Dressed in traditional Kerala attire, he looked, every inch a father figure of Kerala.
